It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert S. Loheed Jr., 80, affectionately known as “Chip,” formerly of Yarmouth, Maine. Chip passed away peacefully at his home in Port Charlotte, Florida, on September 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of his wife, Marguerite (“Maggie”), his daughter, Christine, and his sister, Marilyn.
Chip was born on October 23, 1945, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He spent much of his childhood in South Portland, Maine, where he attended local schools and developed a lifelong connection to the water.
Maggie often joked that Chip had both saltwater and freshwater in his veins, a fitting description for a man whose passion for boating was unmatched. Whether he was sailing, racing hydroplanes, lobstering, or simply enjoying time on the water, Chip was happiest when he was afloat. His love of the sea remained a defining part of his life. Though he did enjoy skiing, snowmobiling and hanging at his camp in Stratton Village during Maine’s long winter months.
Professionally, Chip enjoyed a successful career in sales management. He particularly valued working for family-owned businesses, where he appreciated the close relationships and sense of community that reflected his own values.
Chip’s interests were many. He was an avid follower of sports, racing, and current events, and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and opinions with friends and family. His enthusiasm for life and wide-ranging interests made him a wonderful conversationalist and a cherished companion.
Chip and Maggie made their home in Yarmouth, Maine, where they built a life together and recently celebrated the milestone of their 50th wedding anniversary. Their enduring partnership was a source of pride and joy throughout his life.
Chip was predeceased by his parents, Robert S. Loheed Sr. and Priscilla M. Loheed, as well as his brother, William John Loheed.
Chip is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Marguerite “Maggie” Loheed; his daughter, Christine Bishop and her husband, Jeffrey, of Gorham, Maine; his sister, Marilyn Guerra of Clermont, Florida; Chip and Maggie’s Godson, Benjamin Mack Bohrmann of Missoula, Montana. He is also survived by a brother-in-law and a couple of sisters-in-law, several nieces, nephews, and many friends who will miss his warmth, common sense, and steadfast presence.
Chip will be remembered for his love of family, his devotion to the water, his strong work ethic, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00PM, Saturday, October 24, 2026 at the South Freeport Congregational Church, 98 South Freeport Road, South Freeport with an informal gathering in the adjacent community center hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any charity of your choice in memory of Chip.
