William “Bill” Leslie Metcalf, 59, of Punta Gorda, Florida and formerly of Fort Lauderdale, Florida passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, January 10, 2009 with his family at his side.
He was born August 13, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan to William and Mary Kay Metcalf. Bill moved to Miami, Florida in 1969 at attend the University of Miami, and graduated 1972 with Honors cum laude with degrees in English Literature and Economics. To celebrate his graduation, he rode his bicycle across the United States from Miami to San Francisco with two high school friends.
Bill worked for thirty two years at Broward Community College as a college administrator for the water sports programs of sailing, windsurfing, and snorkeling, college trips to the Florida Keys, Peace River canoe trips, surfing trips to Cocoa Beach, and sailboat racing at Miami Yacht Club, leadership retreats to Cayo Costa, Elliot Key and Adams Key, Pigeon Key, Goshen and the Dry Tortugas and Marquesas with his own boats the Boston Whaler and all of his sailboats for students to enjoy his love for the outdoors and recreation. Bill was named by the Miami Herald as having one of the finest sailing programs in the state of Florida.
He was a member of Detroit Yacht Club where he spent many years of sailing, and sail boat racing on the Great Lakes.
Survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Mary of Punta Gorda; his mother, Mary Kay of Canton, MI; two children, Kate and William of Punta Gorda; two brothers, Jim (wife Carol) of Plymouth, MI and Tom (wife Andrea) of Grosse Ille, MI. His many nieces and nephews, Jim (wife Heather), Teresa, Leslie, Thomas, Megan, Lauren and Adam.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 2pm at the Roberson Funeral Home Punta Gorda Chapel Rev. Robert Mattingly will officate. Reception to follow at the home of Ken and Tina Ice, Pirate Harbor, Punta Gorda.
A memorial will be held also on January 26, 2009 at 5:30pm at St. Bonaventure Church in Davie. Father Ed will officiate. Reception to follow at Tigertail Lake Broward College, Dania Beach.
He will be dearly missed by those who loved him and those lives he touched in South Florida, Michigan and the Bahamas.
